The Notary Public's role
Verify the identity of the person signing the document. The Notary Public will also confirm that the signatory understands the meaning of what is being signed. (Does the person signing understand what they are signing?). This is done to protect the borrower from fraud!
What are the steps to a Notarization?
- You must present valid identification (a valid government issued photo ID) sometimes a second form of ID may also be required.
- The Notary Public will then ensure you understand and can attest to what you’re about to sign.
- You may be required to take an oath prior to signing a document.
- The Notary Public then witnesses your signature.
- Once you have signed the document, the Notary Public will affix the stamp (or “seal”) to the document. The document is now notarized.
There are some documents a Notary Public can not witness, and will recommend you seek the advice of a Lawyer in these instances.
